Why is editing important?
Even a well-translated text can be let down by errors in spelling, punctuation, formatting or mistranslations. And if your text was originally written in English by a careful native speaker, mistakes could still have crept in. A professional edit ensures it's accurate, idiomatic and ready to publish.
What services do I offer?
Bilingual review – This type of check compares the English translation with the Dutch source to assess accuracy, meaning and tone. I flag mistranslations, terminology issues and awkward phrasing to ensure the English reads naturally. I also check spelling, grammar, punctuation and basic formatting, such as headings and lists. Instead of making direct changes, I provide a report or add comments to highlight any issues.
Monolingual review – This assesses how well a text stands on its own, whether translated or originally written in English. If it's a translation, I usually won't refer to the source unless needed. I check clarity, readability and flow, flagging any problems. I also review spelling, grammar, punctuation and formatting, ensuring headings and lists are used correctly. I don't make changes directly but provide feedback via comments or a report.
Revision – I refine English texts and Dutch-to-English translations by making direct edits to improve fluency, clarity and accuracy. This includes adjusting wording, sentence structure and grammar. For best results, I compare translations to the Dutch source to ensure accuracy, but I can work without it if needed. All changes are tracked, allowing you to see and approve them easily.
Proofreading – A final polish before publication to catch any missed typos, punctuation inconsistencies or formatting errors. This is usually done without reference to the source text.
Post-edits of LLM and machine translation – Post-editing is slightly different because it doesn't always involve perfecting a text. You can find out more about how I post-edit texts translated by tools like ChatGPT, DeepL and Google Translate on the MTPE page.
